... Tsunami awareness week March 21 through 27...

Tsunami awareness week is designed to remind all residents and
visitors who live... work... and play near the coast to recognize and
prepare for tsunami hazards. Knowing how to respond during hazardous
tsunamis may save your life and the lives of those around you.

Tsunamis are ocean waves generated by a sudden change of the ocean
water level... most often caused by earthquakes. Tsunamis are
dangerous because the tremendous amount of power within them
increases water depth quickly resulting in surges much farther
inland than typical waves. Also... when a tsunami enters harbors or
bays the water can slosh around in chaotic ways causing powerful and
damaging currents.

There are two warning systems available to make you aware of an
approaching tsunami. The first system is through nature/S behavior
and the second is through emergency alert systems.

Very strong ground shaking near the coast is an indication of an
earthquake that could cause seafloor displacement and/or a submarine
landslide large enough to generate a tsunami. This is your warning!
If you experience strong shaking near the coast you should move to
higher ground. Another natural but not Universal sign of a tsunami is
the rapid receding of ocean water from the beach before the first
tsunami surge occurs.

Tsunamis are mainly caused by strong earthquakes or submarine
landslides and can travel for thousands of miles from the area where
they are generated. In these cases emergency alert systems will
broadcast warnings of tsunamis. These systems are made up of
radio and television broadcasts... sirens... NOAA weather radios... text
messages and the like. If you live... work or visit the coast you
should be aware of how to receive tsunami warnings. Not all systems
are available in all areas.
